Tilting Big Bale Substrate Decompactor. Main Functions
The SPD-BBT has been developed to:
- Process compressed Big Bales of peat and substrate blends
- Decompact and fibre-open the substrate
- Eliminate clods and compacted areas
- Supply a continuous and homogeneous substrate flow to downstream equipment
The result is a structurally stable and uniform substrate, optimised for sowing, tray filling and substrate block formation.
How SPD-BBT Works
- The Big Bale is placed onto the tilting bed of the SPD-BBT using a forklift or pallet truck.
- The system tilts the bale towards the working area, where a lateral milling rotor progressively processes the material across the entire height of the Big Bale.
- The substrate is uniformly decompacted and aerated, ensuring consistent structure and moisture distribution.
- The processed material is discharged into a discharge hopper with automatic level control, regulating and stabilising the feed to downstream machines.
The entire process is fully automated and PLC-controlled, synchronised with the real-time demand of the production line.
Capacity. The SPD-BBT is designed to handle:
- Big Bales up to 6 m³
- Approximate maximum weight: 1,200 kg
Compatible materials:
- Peat
- Substrate blends
- Light organic substrates
Key Advantages of this Big Bale Substrate Decompactor
- Homogeneous Decompaction: The lateral milling across the full height of the Big Bale ensures that both drier and wetter zones are perfectly mixed, resulting in a uniform substrate structure and consistent moisture content.
- Continuous and Stable Flow: The discharge hopper equipped with minimum and maximum level sensors guarantees stable feeding without interruptions, fluctuations or overloads.
- Direct Line Integration. Designed for continuous feeding of: Automated sowing lines, Tray filling machines, Packaging systems, Substrate block or cube forming systems
- Tilting Architecture. The tilting bed allows efficient handling of complete Big Bales, enabling progressive emptying and stable operation even with large-format, high-density bales.
Available Options. Outlet Moistening System
The SPD-BBT can be equipped with a spray bar at the discharge point, allowing:
- Precise adjustment of substrate moisture
- Improved mixing with water or additives
- Direct preparation of the substrate for sowing or compaction processes
Safety and Operation. The system integrates:
- Physical guards on all moving and rotating components
- Safety interlocks during Big Bale loading
- Controlled operation with minimal operator intervention
Designed for continuous, industrial and safe operation.
Typical Applications
